By now, ugly sweaters
and holiday parties
go hand in hand. The first prints of this kind were not actually meant to be "ugly" however. They were designed with pure holiday cheer in mind, but they soon gained a reputation for being unflattering. While there was a bit of push back initially, more and more people began to appreciate the charm of these outlandish designs.
By the early 2000s, entire parties based upon showing off the tackiest sweater
possible became common. The trend took off in Canada in particular. Many people claim the first ugly sweater party was held within Canadian borders, though it's a bit difficult to prove. Either way, the concept has now reached full international acclaim. People all over the world are hopping onto the ugly sweater train!
